Welcome to Mangalore

A local guide for our guests

Santosh Turns 75 · 14th June

Dear Friends and Family,

Many thanks for making the journey to celebrate with me. While you are here in Mangalore, I hope you will find the time to explore a little of this lovely coastal city — and perhaps venture further along the Konkan coast. I have put together below a small selection of places I think are well worth your while.

I look forward to seeing each one of you on the 14th.

Within Mangalore

St Aloysius Chapel
A remarkable Jesuit chapel with ceiling paintings that are among the finest you will see in India — genuinely not to be missed. Allow yourself a good two hours here.
Museum: 9 am–1 pm & 2–5 pm ~10 min drive Allow 2 hrs
Kudroli Temple
A beautifully maintained Shiva temple, lively with devotees and worth an hour of quiet exploration.
6 am–1 pm & 4–8 pm ~5 min drive Allow 1 hr
🏖️
A quiet stretch of sand — a good place to sit and watch the Arabian Sea. Best reached by the ferry from Sultan Battery, which is a pleasant little journey in itself.
~20 min drive Allow 2 hrs
🛕
One of the oldest temples in Mangalore, set in a hillside garden. Peaceful and historically interesting.
~8 min drive Allow 45 min
One of the oldest Catholic churches on the west coast — a graceful, centuries-old building that reflects Mangalore's long history.
~10 min drive Allow 30–45 min
🛕
Three important temples, each with its own character. Kateel, set on a small island in the Nandini River, is particularly atmospheric.
Venkataramana: ~12 min Kateel: ~35 min Allow 1–1.5 hrs each
The old watchtower at the mouth of the Gurupura River is a fine spot for a short walk, and you can take the local ferry across to Tannirbhavi beach — a rather charming way to go.
~20 min drive Allow 45 min + ferry
🏖️
A less-visited beach, uncrowded and pleasant — a good option if you prefer somewhere quieter.
~35 min drive Allow 1.5–2 hrs

Day Trips from Mangalore

Murudeshwar Temple
A full day out, about three hours each way — but well worth it. The Shiva statue standing over the sea is an extraordinary sight, and the temple complex is impressive. Set off early.
~3 hrs drive one way Allow 2–3 hrs at site Full day
Maravante Beach
A truly scenic drive up the coast. Stop at the Krishna Temple in Udupi, then follow the coastal road through Maravante — where the highway runs between the sea and a lagoon — before continuing to Murudeshwar. On the way back, if time allows, do stop at Malpe Beach.
Udupi: ~1 hr drive Full day
🛕
Udupi is about an hour north of Mangalore and is home to the famous Krishna Matha, one of the most important Vaishnava temples in South India. Worth a visit on its own.
~1 hr drive Allow 1.5–2 hrs at site Half day
🍦

A Word on Ice Cream — Please Do Not Leave Without Trying This

Ideal Ice Creams and Pabba's are Mangalore institutions. You simply must go. Both have been making their ice creams for decades, with flavours you will not find anywhere else in India. This is not optional.
